In wait for the next pot of tea laced with rum, here is a bit of content from my Tumblr blog, I wrote this post after the «Regent» episode was released:

The most interesting and most compelling thing about the second season of House of the Dragon is that only two, of all the characters, know what exactly they want and how exactly to achieve it. And both of these characters are cripples. Everyone else has no the slightest fucking idea how to realize their ambitions and what their true ones are. Both Aemond Targaryen and Larys Strong right out of the gate had to put in much more effort and hard work to accomplish something in life. And precisely because the starting conditions of these characters were lower than those of others, they did everything to become higher than any physically healthy person. Larys has the same influence on people as John Silver in Black Sails. Aemond has the same tender yet utterly ruthless heart as Ivar the Boneless in Vikings. And both of them have the same cunning ability to out-think their opponents as Sand dan Glokta in The First Law by Joe Abercrombie. These are at once dread and greatly admired characters, because they all achieved success in spite of themselves. No one cripple can ill afford to look weak, feel weak, be weak. This is why they are so dangerous: pain for them is not a barrier, but a staircase leading above.

“Самое интересное и самое удивительное во втором сезоне Дома Дракона то, что из всех персонажей только двое знают, чего именно они хотят и как именно этого добиться. И оба эти персонажа — калеки. Все остальные не имеют ни малейшего грёбаного понятия, как реализовать свои амбиции и какие у них собственно эти самые амбиции. И Эймонду Таргариену и Ларису Стронгу изначально приходилось прилагать гораздо больше усилий, чтобы чего-то добиться в жизни. И именно из-за того, что стартовые условия этих персонажей были ниже, чем у других, они сделали всё, чтобы стать выше, чем физически здоровые люди. Ларис обладает таким же влиянием на людей, как и Джон Сильвер из Чёрных Парусов. Эймонд обладает таким же нежным и одновременно безжалостным сердцем, как и Ивар Бескостный из Викингов. И оба они настолько же шокирующе расчётливы, как и Занд дан Глокта из Первого закона. Это страшные, но в то же время заслуживающие восхищения персонажи, потому что все они добились успеха вопреки самим себе. Ни один калека не может позволить себе выглядеть слабым, чувствовать себя слабым, быть слабым. Вот почему они так опасны: боль для них — не преграда, а лестница, ведущая наверх.”

Before talking about the King James Version further, I decided to take a short break and just read that essay we mentioned last time, 'A Vote of Thanks to Cyrus' by Dorothy Lee Sayers. However, it would be absolutely impossible to read the essay without saying a word about Natalya Leonidovna Trauberg, who translated it, and Dorothy Lee Sayers herself, who wrote it.

Прежде чем говорить о Библии Короля Якова дальше, я решила взять небольшую паузу и просто почитать то эссе, которое мы упомянули в прошлый раз — “Благодарение Киру” Дороти Ли Сэйерс. Однако прочитать эссе, не сказав сперва хотя бы несколько слов о Наталье Леонидовне Трауберг, которая его перевела, было бы просто немыслимо.

Circumstances have turned out that by this Sunday I had not yet managed to finish the new episode, so this evening I will share with you not a podcast, but a post about House of the Dragon I wrote for my blog on Tumblr:

I’m going to express an unpopular opinion, but all problems of the HoTD characters are because they only talk about what they think is owed to them. That is a problem of all HoTD fans for that matter. How strange to see people are ready — quite genuinely and seriously — to go at each other’s throats just because of who, in their opinion, should sit on the Iron Throne. House of the Dragon is not a story about someone's divine rights, nor about who is the hero and who is the villain.

This story is about how everything tumble down when people forget they are people, when they think only about what is supposedly their. It is so terrible to see all these characters fighting each other when the darkness that would destroy the world of the living could come at any moment. And it's even worse to see most fans don't notice it.

They have troubles with peace. They take the part of the Blacks or the Greens and hate those who took the opposite side. House of the Dragon was supposed to teach us what we all should not do. This show was supposed to be an example of what we must not do. Instead, the fans are divided into factions and treat each other with such fierce contempt and pure hatred that any warring factions in the Middle East would envy.

I hope at least someone understands this is not normal. There is already too much evil in the world, and any such attitude towards each other we only encourage and increase this evil. There is one conversation in Black Sails that I would like to show to every fan of HoTD:

Обстоятельства сложились так, что к этому воскресенью мне ещё не удалось закончить новый эпизод, поэтому сегодня я поделюсь с вами не подкастом, а постом о Доме Дракона, который я написала для своего блога на Тамблере:

“Я сейчас выражу непопулярное мнение, но все проблемы персонажей Дома Дракона оттого, что они говорят лишь о том, что кому причитается. Если уж на то пошло, это проблема и всех поклонников этого сериала. Как странно видеть, что люди готовы — совершенно искренне и всерьёз — вцепиться друг другу в глотки только из-за того, кто, по их мнению, должен сидеть на Железном троне. Дом Дракона — это история не о чьих-то монархических правах, не о том, кто герой, а кто злодей.

Это история о том, как всё рушится, когда люди забывают, что они люди, когда они думают только о том, что им якобы причитается. Так ужасно видеть, как все эти персонажи воюют между собой в то время, когда тьма, способная уничтожить мир живых, может нагрянуть в любой момент. И ещё хуже то, что большинство фанатов этого не замечает.

У них проблемы с миром. Они записываются в чёрную или зелёную команду и ненавидят тех, кто принял противоположную сторону. Дом Дракона должен был научить нас, как мы все поступать не должны. Этот сериал должен был стать примером, как нам поступать друг с другом нельзя. Вместо этого фанаты поделились на фракции и относятся друг к другу с таким лютым презрением и чистой ненавистью, что позавидуют любые противоборствующие стороны на Ближнем Востоке.

Надеюсь, хоть кто-то понимает, что это ненормально. В мире и так слишком много зла, и любым подобным отношением друг к другу мы только поощряем и приумножаем это зло. В Чёрных Парусах есть один разговор, который мне хотелось бы показать каждому фанату Дома Дракона:

This is my workspace where I make my podcast, write and translate fanfics, and where I just feel happy. The second photo shows a skull that was supposed to remind us of death, but my mother and I nicknamed it “Poor Yorick”, and now it makes us laugh.

Вот моё рабочее место, где я создаю подкасты, пишу и перевожу фики, и просто чувствую себя счастливой. На второй фотографии череп, который должен был напоминать нам о смерти, но мы с мамой прозвали его “Бедным Йориком”, и теперь он нас смешит.

Since I started to read the King James Bible, I find very nice things there. I would like to say a few kind, loving words about that, but it's almost impossible without first talking about Bible translations, Hebrew, Aramaic, the Jewish–Roman wars, artistically illuminated manuscripts from Lindisfarne, the Gutenberg's invention that changed the world and, of course, one particular Mel Gibson film about the greatest love and greatest sacrifice in the history of the world. Two or three more episodes will be released about the KJV later: next part will be about the English Reformation and translations of the Bible into Early Modern English, and then we'll speak about the King James Bible itself.
