Ненадолго возвращаемся к Дому Дракона. У меня были кое-какие мысли об Эйгоне, о его прошлом с Эймондом и о его будущем с Ларисом, и теперь они выплеснулись в новый эпизод. Наконец-то. По этому случаю мы вспоминаем приличное количество вымышленных калек!

In wait for the next pot of tea laced with rum, here is a bit of content from my Tumblr blog:

I'm going to express an unpopular opinion, but I don't like fluff very much. Sometimes it's nice to read something warm and fuzzy, without any pain or fear, but in such beautiful yet inevitably brutal worlds as Red Dead is (or Black Sails, or The Walking Dead), — worlds of hardship, violence and savageness, — it looks like some kind of laudanum-induced illusion. I mean, fluffy Red Dead's characters are like faceless ghosts, erased personalities. And it's certainly not what I'm looking for.

Fluff is enjoyable, but it can exist where relevant only, in stories where there is space for it, but RDR2 is not one of those. RDR2 is about blood, death and redemption. Not about fluff, no matter how much characters deserve it, no matter how much we love or want it ourselves.

I'm not saying that there can't be some tender things in the Red Dead's world (or in the Black Sails' one, or The Walking Dead's, for that matter). On the contrary, there can be a lot of ones, we saw it in the game itself. It's just that all this tenderness — care, comfort, love — will always be something harsh and hard, something like clenched jaws and dry, red-rimmed eyes from which tears will never seep, something sharp and piercing, like a gunshot wound, like tuberculosis.

“Я сейчас выражу непопулярное мнение, но я действительно не очень люблю флафф. Иногда приятно почитать что-то белое и пушистое, без всяких боли и страха, но в таких сложных и суровых вселенных как Red Dead Redemption (или Чёрные Паруса, или Ходячие Мертвецы) — вселенных трудностей, насилия и дикости, — это будет выглядеть как какая-то одурманенная лауданумом иллюзия. Я имею в виду, флаффные персонажи из RDR2 — всё равно что призраки без лиц, стёртые личности. А это совсем не то, что я ищу.

Флафф приятен, но он может существовать лишь там, где это уместно, в тех историях, где для него есть пространство, а RDR2 — не одна из таких. RDR2 — это про кровь, смерть и искупление. Не про флафф, как бы сильно его ни заслуживали персонажи, как бы сильно мы его ни любили или ни хотели сами.

Я не говорю, что в работах по этому фандому (или по фандому Чёрных Парусов, или Ходячих Мертвецов, опять же) не может быть чего-то хорошего, нежного. Напротив, такого может быть очень много. Просто это хорошее — забота, утешение, любовь — всегда будет чем-то суровым и жёстким, чем-то из разряда стиснутых челюстей и сухих покрасневших глаз, из которых никогда не польются слёзы, чем-то острым и пронзительным, как огнестрельная рана, как туберкулёз.”

I've increasingly come to believe that Captain Flint and Aemond Targaryen have so many strong parallels. They are both extremely tender and vulnerable on the inside, but absolutely bulletproof, stern and explosive on the outside. Both bear an open, constantly bleeding wound in their hearts. Both are without equal in how far they are willing to go for the sake of their goal or their revenge. But the most interesting thing is that both of these characters have enormous potential of doing good works. Only the pain caused to both of them turned out to be so great it has just about blocked all that is good in them completely. Both Aemond and Flint had gotten burned so badly that later they are almost unable to deviate from the path they took because of it, because of this old burn wound.

Всё больше убеждаюсь, что капитан Флинт и Эймонд Таргариен имеют очень много параллелей. Они оба крайне нежные и ранимые внутри, но снаружи абсолютно пуленепробиваемые, и жёсткие, и взрывоопасные. Оба носят в сердце открытую, непрестанно кровоточащую рану. И оба не имеют себе равных в том, насколько далеко они готовы зайти ради своей цели или своей мести. Но самое интересное: у обоих этих героев есть огромный потенциал к добру, однако боль, им причинённая, оказалась настолько велика, что она почти наглухо заблокировала всё хорошее и светлое, что в них есть. И Эймонд, и Флинт так сильно обожглись, что впоследствии они почти не в состоянии свернуть с той дороги, на которую они встали из-за этого ожога. 

A couple of days ago I received a very nice message on Tumblr about the latest episode of tea & rum. Here it is:

This is what I wrote back:

“I am so happy to hear it! I pondered your question throughout the day and that is what I think:

Aemond is a man accustomed to total self-control. He monitors his every thought and every feeling. That is why he may have some deep and gloomy introspection in Season 3 (in addition to analyzing what is happening and his role on all this military chessboard). Anyway, I hope they will give him such scenes. However, taking into account the ending of Season 2, Aemond will be in great despair. Will he make mistakes on the rebound of that powerful feeling? Hard to tell. Aemond keeps in mind what price his impulsiveness at Storm's End had cost him. I think his destructive rage will be extremely cold in Season 3, and his despair will probably have brilliantly conceived consequences. But. Whatever he will think, whatever he will feel, whatever conclusions he will come to during any self-analysis, he will have no doubt about the path he has chosen. The path of destruction and descent into darkness is the only possible path for him now. It is the road with no return. He can afford to regret, but he cannot afford to doubt. I think he may go down the road of: you call me a monster? i'll show you a monster.

After listening to the new episode, one of my podcast subscribers wrote to me and we had a heart-to-heart discussion about the scene with Aemond in the brothel. I really liked one of her many wise comments on this subject:

“It is worth remembering the conventionally medieval setting assumes that it is absolutely natural for a man, especially a powerful one, to visit brothels, and a person who grew up in such an environment will have this attitude anchored in him in any case, even if he has no need for doing something of the kind. And the fact Aemond refuses this attitude for some time, but eventually visits a brothel anyway, but still does everything in his own way – it's a cool indication a character is thoroughly developed.”

That conversation made me think about at what point I started thinking of Aemond primarily as an asexual character (I'm talking about Aemond in the show, not the book).

So many years had passed between the time he went to a brothel at thirteen and the time he goes there the second time. Aemond hadn't been going to a brothel all those years. It was literally his entire adolescent period. You'd think that a man (women too, but men especially) would have hormones running wild, and it would seem logic suggests that he would have visited brothels during this period, but Aemond did not. He simply didn't have that part of life, the sexual one. This is what made me think Aemond may be asexual.

Even when he comes to Sylvi as a mature adult, he does whatever he wants in the brothel, even drinks milk there, but he doesn't fuck. (Or maybe he fucked, but they just didn’t show that, which is doubtful.) It's more than likely Aemond merely undressed, lay down and curled up. That's all. Because even when Sylvi tries to kiss him, he turns away. It's like he is not interested in it, he has no need of it, he doesn't like it.

I have no idea how they're going to film the arc with Alys Rivers, it will be very interesting to watch. However, even knowing that in the book Alys will have a child with Aemond, I still think of him as asexual. Along with that, he could have not had sex all these years for some of the following reasons:
