Sleep after the operation was restless for Bo — he kept getting up from his bedroll and checking on Carter in the cot: whether he was asleep or not, whether the fever had taken him… Toward the end of the night, Carter started muttering something about little Mackie and the filthy freaks, and Bo stuck a wet rag on his forehead. And stayed sitting nearby to keep an eye on the sorry excuse for a deputy, though what else could be done, he had no idea. But it felt as if, as long as he kept watching, there was a chance he wouldn't be left alone in the snowy wilderness with a rotting corpse in the bed.
– Mackie…
"Delirious again…" – Bo was already starting to nod off.
– Pff, Mo, or whatever your name is. – Carter's voice suddenly sounded firm, and looking up, Bo saw that he had almost sat up in bed and was feeling his arm. – Lie down here like a human being. We don't need you catching a cold on top of everything else.
"And they trusted this man to lead a posse? To track someone down? He can't even remember our names."
– I'm fine. – Shaking his head, Bo stood up and went back to his bedroll. – There's food waiting for you from yesterday. On the table. Heat it yourself.
With a bleary gaze, Matt watched his companion bundle himself into the bedroll by the fireplace. Then he looked at the table and, with a heavy sigh, got up. His ears were ringing, the room swaying from side to side, as if he were not in a trapper's cabin but on a fishing boat — and he even caught a whiff of fish, stirring childhood memories…
"Pull yourself together!"
The dishes kept slipping from Matt's hands, but Bo was so worn out from the night that he didn't react to the noise at all. Nor did the door swinging open wake him, letting in a blast of cold from outside. After relieving himself, Carter thought about checking the traps he'd set out earlier, but his legs were uncooperative, so he stumbled on the second step away from the house.
"To hell with it! They won't spoil."
He went back inside, locked the door behind him, and touched his burning neck with cold fingers. The chill went straight to his bones.
Bo woke abruptly a couple of hours later at the touch on his shoulder and sat up at once, his whole body instinctively tensing. Carter was crouching over him, and his eyes glistened with an unhealthy gleam.
– Come lie with me, be a human. It's freezing.
– What? – Bo edged away from him slightly. – The fire's burning, your blanket's twice as thick as my bedroll, what more do you want?
– The fire's too far. And I can't warm up on my own, I've got the chills. The weather's turning worse too, the cold's coming in through the walls. Please.
"I hate all of this. I hate it." – Bo stared viciously at Matt's tired face for a few agonizing seconds, then waved his hand:
– Go roll over to your wall.
Knowing himself, he left his gun belt on the chair. And lay down on the edge, so that if anything happened he'd fall to the floor himself, rather than shove the wounded man off. Carter immediately pressed his back against Bo's and shuddered several times all over.
"Damn it."
Bo didn't want to think about what would happen if Carter did kick the bucket, and he spent a solid hour chasing away dark thoughts, but as luck would have it, nothing else came to mind. Once warm, Matt fell into a deep sleep and started snoring. On the one hand, it was good that he was sleeping and not raving despite the fever, but on the other — it was annoying. Him, and this closeness, and why he'd led the posse here, and why the hell Bo had even taken this job in the first place…
When Bo suddenly snapped his eyes open beneath him, Matt froze and braced for a blow. To the face or maybe to the gut. He'd been trying to climb over the sleeping guy carefully and quietly, but had severely underestimated how light a sleeper he was. Yet nothing happened.
Bo stared straight at Matt with wide pale-grey eyes, which now seemed completely colourless and lifeless. He didn't move and didn't seem to be breathing. His face showed neither irritation nor fear — there wasn't even a shadow of any emotion. It was as if his soul had left his body, and it was barely continuing to function by sheer inertia.
"What the…" – Under that empty stare, Matt felt uneasy, and a chill ran down his spine, as if the blizzard howling outside had seeped inside through Bo's glassy eyes.
