Somebody to blame

Today the US-Israeli war on Iran turns one month old. The Strait of Hormuz is now open for Iran's friends only (China is at the top of the list; Thailand just joined the club). A thousand oil tankers stay anchored within the Persian Gulf with scant hope of sailing out of it any time soon. The tankers that had made it out though the Strait before the attacks began have by now reached their destinations. Call that "old oil" and it has already been repriced up. But now will come "new oil" and its prices will be limited only by the ability to pay because the volumes will be restricted to just 80% of what oil importing nations require.
As I explained in two of my last two articles (1, 2) the US attack on Iran had scant chances of success. Why, then, did it happen? Explanations range from plain old stupidity — "Look who's in charge!" — to "It doesn't matter." Why wouldn't it matter? Why would a military quagmire that shuts down much of the world's economy and triggers force majeure breaches of contract throughout much of it — not matter? One answer that immediately springs to mind is that "This sucker is going down" anyway. The attack on Iran would then be simply used as a way to deflect attention from this fact. The plan, then, would be as follows:
1. Attack Iran
2. Watch global economy seize up as a direct result
3. Blame Iran to pacify the angry mobs back home
But is this sucker going down? Let's briefly review the fiscal position of the United States. According to the numbers most recently published by the US Treasury, it is as follows:
• Assets: $6 trillion
• Liabilities: $48 trillion
• Additional liabilities (virtually all social spending): $88 trillion
• Household debt: $19 trillion (a record)
That is, for every dollar the US actually has there are almost 26 dollars that the US must have but doesn't. Another way to look at it is that the US has a debt to GDP ratio of over 500% while anything over 100% is generally considered economically fatal. Please keep comments about "the printing press" to yourself; when the only oil that makes it out of the Persian Gulf has to be paid for in yuan and when even the Gulf Arabs are selling off US debt as fast as they can, printing even more dollars would only accelerate the fiscal death spiral.
The Washingtonians must understand full well that no one will bail out the American economy. This may have been possible before because other nations saw potential in it. Indeed, the United States was the engine of innovation and global economic growth for several decades. But today the American economy is no longer in the lead and the rest of the world would rather turn off its life support and let it die.
What most mainstream economists would recommend in this situation is austerity: cut social spending before it's too late; cancel Social Security, Medicare, disability, SNAP, housing subsidies, federal pensions and much else. Of course, such measures would not be sufficient unless the US defense budget were also zeroed out. But such measures would be unpopular and no politician would want to be held responsible for taking them. This is where tipping the entire world into a horrific energy crisis would be advantageous: it would give the politicians someone other than themselves to blame when the money machine that keeps a good half of the US population housed and fed suddenly stops working.
That seems like a good explanation. But if you prefer "It's the stupidity, stupid!" — that works too. Of course, starting a war that has an excellent chance of ending in defeat is pretty stupid too, so it's stupidity any way you look at it. And, either way, "This sucker is going down."
It’s all about what they call „power projection“. The war is the last opportunity to do it - against Iran, who is now a proxy of China & Russia. Good luck. Power projection for the US is like water for normal people: they feel like dying if they lose it. This is ABSOLUTE. A PRINCIPLE. Not negotiable. No why? or what for? is possible. This is how Enpires die.
„If we can’t humiliate and subjugate the entire world we are threatened in our existence. Thank you for your attention.“
It will not work, didn't work during the plandemic it will not work now. People instead of blaming Iran will gather more respect for Iran they will see:
That country with an ancient past that just gave a mortal blow to the Pedophile Empire, or Great Satan as Iranians call it.
I for one still think that USA still fits. USA as in United Satans of America, USA is not united in anything other than the most abject satanic things. Satanic is what what satanic does, and eating human flesh destroying children in any way possible certainly fits the bill.
For me as an Orthodox Christian I can imagine a world in which Iran might get a bit of help from Christ and Archangel Michael on this one. Jesus said: “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” The US, as in United Satans, already are going to any lengths to tie itself to that rock
Karma
Ed, nice picture indeed. Except, the stone taking Uncle Sam down just needs a little editing of the label - to read "Made in Iran"; Iran itself won't end up in the deep, but will remain on top, as it has for thousands of years.
Originally I meant "Iran war" of course, I think it is still implied. If I put too many things on this metaphor, the metaphor might sink with Sam & the rock. I'll leave it like that for now.
This is the only explanation I have too. Yes, we have policy papers from 2009 with grand ideas about subduing China- but it's NOT possible in 2026. Neither the US nor Israel benefits here, except some people making big $$ on stock market fluctuations. The deep state isn't going to start a war this dangerous just so a few people can make quick $ (9/11 notwithstanding.) The only reason I can see is they know the economy is in for a massive crash and Trump is the perfect scapegoat puppet for them.
Anybody else now realizing that Butler assassination was total agitprop? I was so fooled. I bet Putin wasn't fooled by it.
Rachel Winkel,
Vous parlez de l’attentat au ketchup ?
Maria Lavos , Si, de eso
"The Status Quo" ???
"Bankruptcy Reorganization"???
"Dept Moratorium" ???
"Nuclear War"???
Joe Cassese, i expect something much more organic. Standing by the side of the road, waiting for humanitarian assistance which never comes. Virtual victories in real wars inevitably lead to virtual gas at gas stations and virtual food in supermarkets. Shortly thereafter, citizens become virtualized as well.
Dmitry Orlov, what? Don’t tell me you never invested in Metaverse? :)
Demitry Orlov, Quick to judge. Are you implying I'm standing on the side of the road waiting for humanitarian assistance?
Joe Cassese, no, not at all! I am sure that you are waiting for "The Status Quo" since that's at the top of your list. Am I wrong?
The
sucker is by now in the faze of uncontrolled behavior,
we have had speeches by sucker with plenty of material for comedians all
around the world, now we have insults with jargon of gang bands (the last one offering
Saudi Prince Ben Salman kiss Donnie's @ss), I wonder how much can MBS tolerate
his humiliation.
leoveria2007, that Wahhabibi MBS and his ilk can do it all day long with no problem. If I were a Sunni Muslim aligned with these Saudi scum I would stop and think long and deep what it is they believe in - Allah or the bloody dollar.
Demitry Orlov, No. I'm not waiting for the Status Quo. The West's ruling class is stuck in the mud. The rulers of Fantasy Island (USA) have allowed a mentally delusional US President and a dysfunctional Congress controlled in Western Asia by Psychopathic Homicidal Maniacs to open Pandora's Box. I'm near the end of the road. In August, I'll turn 84. I'm not a Johnny-Come-Lately. US Debt Moratorium and Bankruptcy Organization is the only hope we have as a species to put Pandora back in her Box.
Hi Dmitry, as you stated in "The Five Stages Of Collapse." If we had collapsed 26 years ago, USA could have started anew and perhaps even better. But, the way these trillionaires and their complicit underlings have chosen; makes this collapse 1000X worse for USA and inflicts suffering throughout the world. I can't wait to see what happens to them all in the hereafter; when God, The Universe has the final say.
Dmitry Orlov, indeed. The New Dawn rises in The East.
Dmitry Orlov, you're channeling Aaron Good here.
Yesterday I came up with a plan to save the US economy from collapsing. Here's the press release about the plan on Dropbox. It's a partial default. What do you think of it?
My plan is to default on all of the US Treasury securities held by our so-called "allies" - the NATO countries, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf monarchies, Argentina, Australia and Japan - but to honor all of our debts to Russia, China, India, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and the rest of the Global South.
Also, it's necessary to cut the budget of the Defense Department by 80% and the budget of the CIA by 100%. Either Wall Street or Main Street must be dumped, and I propose that we dump Wall Street - hard. To dump Main Street would be to condemn 99% of the American people to a lifetime of poverty and hopelessness.
Geoff Young, in a shootout between you and the Pentagon/CIA, I would bet on the Pentagon. It has more guns/assassins.
Dmitry Orlov, And psycho/sociopaths. Almost as many as Wall Street.
What if the aim is to loot Europe of all its remaining wealth, in order to kick the can down the road for a couple of years? Blocking the Hormuz Strait and the Ukrainians blowing up oil & gas facilities in the Leningrad Oblast then make sense - the Europeans will have to pay whatever the US demands for its oil and gas (and grain, too, probably) or else freeze and/or starve...
... liquidity facilities work during times of stress, such as the 2008 financial crisis or the COVID-19 pandemic, where these lines were activated to prevent disruptions. Currently, the Euro is the world's second most popular reserve currency, holding about 20% of foreign currency reserves, compared to the US Dollar's 60%." All of that suggests to me that the US could simply say, "No more dollar-euro swapping," and that would be the end of it.
Geoff Young, AI answer? You didn't expect the truth, I hope. Did you? If you did, that's rather naïve.
Dear Dmitry
have you read about the Khalsa, a Sikh army so strong they were dictating to the Royalty. And the Sikh Royalty which colluded with the British in order to regain some of the power. Maybe DC has a deal with the Chinese/Russians to cut the defense budget.
Charles Dewolff, That doesn't look like a deal. That looks like treason the rest seem stories people tell themselves to justify it.
Dmitry, the 100% ratio was always using govt debt (only) as the numerator for when troubles get real. By this measure, USA is around 124% - which is bad enough. For total societal obligations, its more in the range 200-300%. But yes, USA is in trouble.
ThirdChimp, it's very important to know whether someone is 100% dead or 300% dead. Not.
"Why, then, did it happen?" Is it also possible that this is part of restraining/crashing the other contenders for world leadership ? If America senses its declining power, it might just decide that energy is the chokehold it can use to prevent China/Russia from pulling ahead. Surely they knew the immediate consequences of attacking Iran on energy supply.
Dmitry Orlov, I think it could be the next chapter in a stupid plan that has been running underneath all recent and current administrations. Whatever the hypothesis, it needs to account for the fact they must have known the effect ME war would have on energy markets.
ThirdChimp, must they have? Their plan A was instant regime change and there was no plan B. "But that's stupid!" you might exclaim. My point exactly!
A bit off topic, but I'd appreciate your take on this: I first learned about you years ago in a YouTube video where you had a fascinating discussion with JH Kunstler, Chris Masterson, JM Greer, and others. I started following you, Greer, and Kunstler since then. I find Kunstler a splendid author. I appreciate his takes on urbanism, Covid, decline, and the general crazyness of American society. I like his podcast and the interview with Matias Desmet was particularly interesting. I like his World Made by Hand novels. What I do not understand is his position on the Iran war. Even if he is Jewish, as there are many Jewish authors like Jeffrey Sachs who are quite critical of Israel. So why is it that many clearly smart and educated people lose it and even get aggresive when the topic discussed is Israel? Why is it that they cannot understand what is really going on? In Kunstler's case, it is especially baffling, considering that he understands the debacle in Ukraine.
Alejandro Carbajal, same here exactly! Once he was lamenting being called a Zionist poodle. I always picture that when he brings up the topic of the zioentity. But his Geography of Nowhere books are on my favorites list. A great example of why it's good to read broadly even if you disagree on certain topics.
Zoë, I agree. I do try to read broadly to get a better view of things. And I have learned that it is almost impossible to agree with everything a particular author writes. That does not make their work less valuable, but it gives one perspective. Cheers.
You left out greed as a motive. Trump and Netanyahu think they can break up Iran, enslave the Iranians and take everything that's not nailed down. That's the only explanation for the Ukraine war, too.
I do hope they fail but it's not over yet.
Karen FS, it's stupider than that. Netanyahu needs war to stay out of jail and Trump and his friends use war to play the markets and make billions off insider trading.
I guess it's an original way of doing things. Make this stupid war, so the enemy destroys all your bases in the middle east, forcing you out, so you no longer have to take the unpopular decision of shutting down all these bases and pulling out of the middle east. Yes, absolutely genious. As long as the bankers buy into it, maybe they won't kill him or his family.
Stupidity indeed, I agree, and the corruption at the top you mention. I think that the Washingtonians an Brusselonians do really believe, on the whole, in the validity of their views, not seeing what is staring them in the face. They create a crisis and then turn around on a dime to solve it, disregarding their culpability ad infinitum. There is no accountability, and it is not sought by the subsidized media that have constant spectacular lies to feed the public.
Who owns all that debt? Are they in trouble too, or can they just cancel it on a computer somewhere?
