A few words about spiritual practices
Serious philosophical works claim that all the practices that came to Western people from the East are not adapted to the Western mentality and do not have the desired effect on it, and in some cases are dangerous for it.
The practice is effective action aimed at increasing perception by maintaining a healthy body, clarity of mind and an open heart. Moreover, this or that practice is effective in a specific area, at a specific moment and for a specific person. There is no need to talk about any mass participation here.
Imagine a surgeon who would say and preach the method of removing the appendix as an effective method for improving the quality of life and thought, increasing earnings and improving personal life, etc. for everyone. We would avoid such a “specialist” many kilometers away.
Why should we have any other criteria in the spiritual realm than the criteria we apply in ordinary material everyday life which is common sense? Philosophers say just the opposite: the only criterion for the truth of a proposed practice is a person’s common sense.
Now a few words about spirituality in practices. The sages say that by spirituality a person understands a series of emotional outbursts and stimuli that one strives to comprehend, instead of other real progress in one's life. In rushing to get caught up in the storm of emotions through “practices,” we are doing much the same thing as people waiting outside the supermarket doors, waiting for the doors to open so they can run and grab the shiny new cheap appliance. Emotions, excitement, delight, selfishness. Instead of calmness, prudence, moderation and service to others.
Any true practice must lead a person to several basic points directly related to human life:
1. Body health;
2. Clarity and sobriety of thoughts;
3. The desire to comprehend the Law of the Universe without the desire to possess It;
4. Order in the everyday and social sphere: relationship in the family, at work, in society;
5. The desire to protect and serve all living things;
6. Cultivating a sense of unity with all Humanity.
The last point is necessary for realizing your own purpose in life and getting rid of the feeling of consumer selfishness.
