A Drop of Faith Between Earth and Sky
We have forgotten how to value ourselves. We have grown accustomed to seeing the world around us as nothing but a series of trials and gray days—days where, obeying some unknown command, we feel compelled to search for meaning.
We refuse to perceive life as a gift, viewing it instead as a rusty coin tossed to us as change while others were handed gold. These are all distorted notions and misconceptions—ideas that were never true, yet became our reality. We created these harsh circumstances and turned them into fact because we began to believe in our own delusions...
While teaching Carlos Castaneda, Don Juan guided him toward understanding the importance of faith: You must firmly believe that personal power exists—that it can be used and accumulated...
The hunt for power is a strange and fascinating business. First comes the idea, then the attunement, and then—bam! It happens! Don Juan said that a teacher’s very first step in instructing a student is to instill the idea that the world is not what it seems: The teacher’s first act is to instill the idea that the world we know is merely an appearance—a description of the world. Every effort the teacher makes is aimed at proving this to the student.
Yet, accepting this idea is the hardest thing in the world. We are completely held captive by our own personal view of the world, a view that compels us to feel and act as if we knew everything there is to know about it. From the very first moment, the teacher’s aim is to halt that view.
At first glance, these words might seem like "just another oddity from a Castaneda book." And that is true—but only from the perspective of ordinary, everyday thinking. Magical thinking, however, allows us to see something extraordinary and—thanks to these words—take a leap into the unknown.
What does "seeing" reveal? We inhabit a world that surrounds us—a world we have described and endowed with specific qualities (often in shades of gray or, conversely, through rose-colored lenses) simply because we believe it to be so. Magical Knowledge teaches that at the foundation of everything lies a threefold connection:
Faith — Idea — Power
Faith shapes our vision. Through faith, ideas emerge in our consciousness, and we bring them to fruition using power—whether mechanical, physical, or intangible. The most difficult challenge on the Path of Knowledge is the first significant step: stepping away from the belief that the world is exactly as we are accustomed to perceiving it, and that we are who we believe ourselves to be.
This triad of "faith, idea, and power"—combined with the realization that the world takes shape according to the contours of our faith—leads us to a fundamental conclusion: Each person is the creative center of their own life, possessing absolute authority over what unfolds within it. Life and the world begin to transform when our faith transforms.
Such a transformation of faith is accessible to anyone, regardless of conditions or circumstances. A well-known magical law states that through faith, we acquire the qualities and attributes of that in which we believe. It is faith that connects us to a source of power; as this power enters our lives, it brings with it the qualities of that source.
If we believe that injustice and lawlessness are inherent parts of the world, we ourselves become embodiments of lawlessness. If we believe in constant struggle and the predatory drive to "carve out a place in the sun," we ourselves become predators. If we believe that we lack power over our own lives, we become victims.
To change one’s life, one must believe that change is possible. And for that, a mere drop of faith is enough. Where can we gather this drop? In our hearts. If everyone believes in a better life—gathering a drop of faith in their heart that such a life is possible—and looks around, we will see that we are living in an Ocean of Eternity composed of the drops within every person's heart.
This Ocean is the Eternal Source of our strength.
