Tonal and Nagual: The Two Worlds of Your Perception
Don Juan said that the world is not a collection of forms; it is pure energy permeating the universe.
No one perceives the world directly. A tool is required to transform energy into visible forms and sensations. That tool is the tonal—or, in other words, your personality.
Your personality is the center of your world. By changing your personality, you change the world. The world takes on the qualities that dominate your personality.
Your personality is a pair of glasses you put on to see what is happening; you view the world through them.
For instance, if a sense of self-importance dominates your personality, you will perceive the world as a place where everything threatens your safety and status. You will attack to avoid being attacked. This is the world of the predator.
If, however, self-pity dominates your personality, you will see the causes of your failures in the world around you; you will feel constantly thwarted by circumstances, people, politics, the economy, a lack of money, or unfavorable conditions.
You will see yourself being exploited and perceive everyone else as happy while you are not. This is the world of the "poor baby me"—which, at its core, is also the world of the predator.
To change the world, change yourself.
As you shed your sense of self-importance, you will notice that the world is not as aggressive or dangerous as it once seemed.
By letting go of self-pity, you will realize your own capabilities and see that the world is ready to support your endeavors—and that there is no one to blame and no reason to do so.

Why doesn't the world change, and why do problems remain unsolved?
Because you cannot change the world directly. You change it only by strengthening your personality. Yet, that personality must become the true center of your world.
If money, the church, a romantic partner, your job, or your family becomes the center of your world, then everything in your life will depend on fluctuations in your finances, the church, your relationship, your career, and so on. Only when the self—and the strengthening of that self—becomes the center of your world can you truly change it.
The self must be strengthened in order to open up to the unknown—the world of the nagual.
The nagual is everything that lies beyond your self, beyond the "glasses" through which you view the world. Your hidden potential, the home of your power, and the center of your creativity all reside within the nagual.
However, you can only work consciously with the nagual if your tonal—your personality—is strong.
To achieve this, you must shed the traits of the "man of ignorance": self-importance, self-pity, aggression, fear, and irresponsibility.
Strengthening the personality requires cultivating the traits of the Man of Knowledge: humility, detachment, an appreciation for beauty, high moral integrity, impersonality, sobriety, and self-control.
A strong personality is like a pair of high-quality lenses through which you view the past, present, and future.
By opening up to the nagual, your world expands because your vision widens. Through the *nagual*, you achieve total unity with the world, becoming pure energy. Castaneda called this state "third attention" or the Fire from within.

May the Power be with you!
