Goal for Capricieux server (`capricieux.magi-reco.com`, handling the Archive App, renting for another year, VPS separated from Totentanz server).

About

Intermediate changelog

Related to Totentanz:

  • The main server has been migrated to different hosting service due to former one breaking everything and being unable to do anything. Right now everything should work. The latency might go up or down due to change of geolocation.
  • The game now includes NA version of Arc 1 Ending, accessible from the story collection menu.
  • The server now implements RFC 867 (TCP only) using magireco's internal daytime formatting.
  • Minor improvements in the infra.

Related to Capricieux:

  • A part of the totentanz client update includes removal of some of telemetry that is sent to Capricieux to be discarded. No functional changes here except for lower network traffic and slightly lower resources comsumption. Obviously, this does not affect the unpatched versions from Google Play and App Store which still have the thinkingai modules builtin.
  • The first year is over in a month, the hosting's prices went up during this time. The new goal is published, in case of reaching it will be prolonged for another year.

Intermediate changelog

Related to Capricieux:

  • There is a maintenance planned somewhere at `02.06.2026 02:00 MSK — 03.06.2026 02:00 MSK` which translates to `2026-06-01 23:00 — 2026-06-02 23:00` in UTC or `2026-06-02 08:00 — 2026-06-03 08:00` in JST. No action is required, just be aware of it and refrain from opening the Archive App during this time period if you're paranoid.
  • There is a slight chance of something breaking after the upgrade, in which case there would be a separate notice. In case of no further notice, it's fully operational.

Related to Totentanz:

  • The `Magical Paper Sumo` is now available by clicking on the banner.
  • A new overlay for translating strings that originate from API server side was added: https://github.com/Puella-Care/en-code . Currently, only mission descriptions are added.
  • Web assets compression was improved, lowering the traffic consumption.
  • Various translation updates.
  • Various bugfixes.
  • Various updates in preparation for Node.js v26.x.
  • TLS certificate retrieval fully migrated to `ngx-acme` module.

Capricieux server becomes Stratum 2 Time Server

Disclaimer: if you're interested only in Totentanz itself, feel free to ignore this post. Intermediate changelog for Totentanz is planned be released later this month.
It's been more than eight months since the archive app (Android and iOS versions) was routed to the Capricieux server.
During this time period, as far as i know, there was zero requests for changes from Aniplex.
While i have zero issues with it and my contacts remain open for it to change, i expect the situation to stay the same, and it feels wasteful to maintain it purely as a stub.
That said, starting from May 2026, the Capricieux server obtains a second purpose as a Stratum 2 Time Server and joins the NTP pool project, specifically the Japan zone: https://www.ntppool.org/zone/jp
Yay.
Brief summary of what it means for:
- Archive app users: barely anything, unless something catastrophic happens to the zone and the server gets overloaded. Existing service remains intact.
Judging from the current numbers, the jp zone is starving in terms of client/server ratio. It also reached the critical mass that instakills conntrack on port 123; and in case of a partial outage, it might collapse easily.
- Totentanz users: nothing, as all of its infrastructure is separate from Capricieux.
The infra has barely enough power to cover the server's own needs, so giving it an extra load is out of the question.
- Arbitrary Internet users within Japan: a bit higher time synchronization stability, a bit lower risk of collapse of the zone.
Assuming Aniplex eventually uses their right to steer the server, they may have access to its NTP as well. Hopefully i don't have to explain why it's not a problem.
- Arbitrary Internet users outside of Japan: no changes.

Battle system revamp

To celebrate the anniversary of Totentanz, a major gameplay update has been prepared: Magical Paper Sumo is now implemented as the primary battle system.
After extensive internal testing, it was found that sumo gameplay offered several advantages over the previous system, including improved clarity, better balance stability, decisive match outcomes, and a significantly reduced need to keep up with power injustice, complex skill interactions, and ever-growing damage numbers.
For this reason, the traditional gameplay system has been retired, and the game will now launch directly into Sumo Mode. A more streamlined, stable, and dynamic battle experience is now available for everyone; no client update is required, the changes are applied automatically and can not be reversed.
Happy Anniversary, and please enjoy the updated game experience!

Intermediate changelog
