Question
Many schools instruct practitioners to keep the mouth closed and place the tongue against the palate. Some further teach that the tongue should rise during exhalation and descend during inhalation, calling the tongue the “key” to the practice. Is this truly so?
Answer
Such instructions are primarily intended for ordinary practitioners. Their purpose is to preserve Vital Energy and inspire the aspiration toward longevity and Immortality. By themselves, however, these methods do not constitute the realization of Original Nature (Benxing 本性), nor do they directly lead to Eternal Life.
The upward and downward movement of the breath primarily serves to restore Jing (精), strengthen the brain, and preserve health in old age.
Most people prematurely exhaust their Qi (氣) through attachment to passion and sensual pleasure. Therefore the ancient Masters taught the preservation of Jing (精), the strengthening of the Lower Elixir Field (Xia Dantian 下丹田), the conservation of Yang, and the restoration of vitality. For this reason, anyone seeking Immortality should first master the preservation of Essence.
Master Liao Kun said: “The Cavity of the Heavenly Pool (Tianchi Xue 天池穴) lies above and is connected with the brain. Through it Vital Energy naturally flows downward. Therefore the tongue is raised to the palate, forming a bridge by which True Vitality descends into the Lower Dantian, where it is stored for alchemical transformation.”
When the tip of the tongue touches the palate, Vital Energy gathers before the Original Cavity of Spirit (Ziqiao 紫竅). Gradually this center becomes the natural object of contemplation. With the eyes closed, it is perceived without seeing. With inward listening, it is heard without sound. When the tongue maintains its proper position, it supports the circulation of Vital Energy.
When thought becomes unified, it naturally returns to this center. Therefore awareness of the Original Cavity of Spirit should be maintained while walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. Suddenly the heart becomes pure, the spirit is elevated, and Vital Energy fills the inner cavity to overflowing. The body grows firm and resilient. Within profound stillness, free from thoughts and emotions, the practitioner awakens simultaneously to True Emptiness (Xu 虛) and to Original Nature (Benxing 本性).
Thereafter Vital Energy continues to expand, understanding deepens, and Shen (神) becomes all-embracing.
At that moment a sudden flash of True Yang appears, as though the Mysterious Pass (Xuanguan 玄關) were beginning to open.
