85: Payment in kind

Payment in kind (or, in this context, salary in kind) is a form of wage compensation where workers receive goods, services, or other property instead of money. This method has historically been used in agriculture, household service, and early industrial settings, where employers might provide food, housing, clothing, or other necessities as part of a worker’s compensation. In the broader sense, payment in kind also refers to other business repayments or compensations (interest, debt etc.) using things other than cash: goods, services, or even further securities like additional debt.

Chief gave wheels as pay? Yikes.
At best he’s starting some sort of convoluted Multi-level marketing scheme where his employees have to make wheels for the reward of being able to sell wheels for profit.
At worst he’s just going to let them starve, I guess.
Though I guess for the chief the hiring process is probably pretty easy since he’s just exploiting the poor un uneducated. There’s always someone else to replace his current staff. “Do you have two working hands? Can you work for 14 hours a day? Oh you’re really desperate for work? Perfect.”
Giving "out" or "out" extra rations?
Make four wheels, get one as pay.
