A wonderful example of the effective use of this tool is provided by the movie Legal Eagles, in which Robert Redford plays an experienced assistant district attorney who has just been fired for reasons too complicated to discuss here. He joins Debra Winger, a small-time defense attorney, in her advocacy on behalf of the Daryl Hannah character, a beautiful young woman accused of killing her lover. This is a dream case for the scandal sheets and way over Winger’s inexperienced head. The prosecution has the murder weapon, the motive, and the eyewitness who puts the defendant at the scene. It’s apparent from the reaction to the prosecution’s opening statement that the jury and the press have already found Redford’s new client guilty as charged.
