Left 4 Dead 2 Outbreak

Fans Are Porting Left 4 Dead 2 to the CS:GO Engine — With Valve's Official Permission
A team of enthusiasts has announced an ambitious project called Left 4 Dead 2: Outbreak — a fan-made modification that brings the cult co-op zombie shooter to a modern 64-bit architecture. Development is being carried out under an official Valve license with the right to distribute through Steam, and it's built on a deeply modified branch of Source Engine 1 from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive with DirectX 11 support.
Work on the project began back on November 4, 2024, and was kept under wraps for two years under a non-disclosure agreement.
What Changed Technically
The port's main goal is to overcome the rigid limitations of the original engine while maintaining full backward compatibility with old mods. The developers raised the edict limit to 8,000 objects and expanded the map coordinate grid to 128,000 units. This opens up the possibility for mappers to create seamless gigantic levels and place huge hordes of infected on them without the risk of crashing the server. At the same time, the mod automatically loads all campaigns and assets from the base game, delivering higher FPS and faster level loading.
"Outbreak exists as an optional upgrade focused on technology, modding, convenience, and security. The project will never become a numbered sequel, and the developers have no legal right to change Valve's story, maps, or base assets," emphasizes project producer Steven Foy.
New Features for Players and Modders
Alongside engine optimization, the authors added first-person legs for the survivors, realistic weapon sway, and a flexible framework for creating new weapons. Unlike standard addons, which are forced to overwrite existing slots, the new system allows enthusiasts to introduce fully independent firearm models with their own sounds and animations. Any new features remain strictly optional and can be disabled via client console variables.
Security and Bug Fixes
Special attention was given to the long-standing network code security issues that Valve never addressed in the original. The creators of Outbreak have closed known remote code execution vulnerabilities, added a built-in blacklist of dangerous servers, and introduced a profile masking feature in the server browser for protection against stalkers. Common bugs such as infected getting stuck in vents and environmental objects have also been eliminated — without interfering with the fundamental balance of competitive multiplayer.
When and How to Play
The release of Left 4 Dead 2: Outbreak is planned for Steam, where the mod will be distributed for free and will get its own Steam Workshop page. The only requirement is a licensed copy of Left 4 Dead 2 in your library. The project is currently in closed testing, and the developers are bringing in authors of key servers and plugins to ensure full SourceMod support on launch day.
