A Dog's Mind in Geopolitics

Since I stopped giving YouTube interviews, life got better. I no longer have to hold forth attempting to answer the same set of stupid questions over and over again by pointing out that they are stupid. That was, of course, futile; the quality of the questions did not improve over time — predictably so, since they all came from the headlines in Western press. I had a queasy feeling the entire time, since the audience is being force-fed bullshit and I was serving as an unwilling accessory to this process. (Well, not quite unwilling; I had an ulterior motive, which was to attract visitors to my blog.) I could not flatter myself that I was evening the score or enlightening people because, I am quite sure, any discussion of bullshit is still just bullshit.
But sometimes I do find it within myself to comment on what passes for the news in the West. The news of the hour is never particularly interesting, but it becomes interesting when zooming out and looking for patterns. And here we find an obvious pattern.
Objective: Get Russia to agree to a cease fire in the Ukraine without conditions, never mind an actual peace agreement or concessions from the Ukrainian side. Then rearm the Ukrainian army, fill the Ukraine with NATO troops and try to defeat Russia again.
Progress so far: None. Russia is winning. Kill ratio is around 35:1 in Russia's favor and Russia is slowly but surely achieving its officially declared objectives.
Gambits attempted so far:
• Threaten Russia with even more sanctions. Result: none.
• Threaten tariffs against China and India for buying energy from Russia. Result: none.
• Meet with Russia's leader on US soil and say nice things. Result: none.
• Threaten to provide the Ukrainians with Tomahawk cruise missiles. These can be nuclear-tipped and can only be launched by a US crew, and so deploying any of these in the former Ukraine would mean the start of a nuclear war with Russia. Not a very successful nuclear war, mind you: any one of these has maybe a 3% chance of penetrating Russian airspace, being very old, rather slow and quite easy to shoot down even using Soviet-era air defense systems (such as the ones Syria once had). Result: none.
• Propose to meet Russia's leader on EU soil (in Budapest) and say nice things. Result: none.
• Cancel the meeting in Budapest and impose some more sanctions on a couple of Russian energy companies. Result: none.
The reason that there are no results is that none of these gambits offered to Russia what Russia has demanded late in 2021: demilitarization, denazification and neutral status for the former Ukraine, no foreign troops on Ukrainian soil, NATO rolled back to where it was in 1991 and all sanctions lifted. Russia presented an official document defining these demands. The US officials ignored the document. That is fine; what can't be achieved through diplomacy will be achieved through armed conflict.
This self-defeating pattern of behavior reminded me of a story my friend Orren Whiddon told me while we were sitting on his porch (a.k.a. "stoop") in Pennsylvania a decade or so ago.
Orren once had a dog — "a very smart dog," he said. Once the dog ran over to the neighbors' property — who were ornery rednecks armed to the teeth — and killed a chicken. Orren went over to them, made amends and whipped the dog.
The dog, being smart, thought: "OK, no more chickens." And so a little while later the dog ran over to the neighbors' property and instead killed a duck.
Orren went over again, made amends and whipped the dog. The dog, being smart, thought: "OK, no more ducks."
And so a little while later the dog ran over to the neighbors' property and killed a goose. At which point the neighbors shot the dog. End of story.
Dmitry, I'm not sure whether I'm "damning with faint praise" or praising with faint damnation, but I much, much prefer your writing to your interviews. I first found you through your books and columns and continue looking forward to each new one. Your boredom in the YouTube videos was evident. I'm glad your life has gotten better.
I have to say that the interviews are fun to watch. Its refreshing seeing you cut through the BS. Too many of the Youtubers can't separate political narratives from the actions, and their reactions to you are priceless.
Gordon Goodly,
My sentiments exactly. The interviewers questions were often repititious, but you got around to answering what you thought was important, and your answers and expressions were always amusing and pungeant I always admired your use of the English language, your 2nd language. I will miss your interviews.
even so, good thing is I found your valuable Substack fr Nima YouTube
Never say never.
I noticed your absence on YouTube...now I know why. You are right, geopolitics on YouTube is incredibly repetitive - it was great for the first couple of months of the SMO and then just became an endless riffing.
I loved this post!
Mais uma excelente postagem, senhor Orlov. Greetings from 🇧🇷
Frankly, I loved your interviews with Nima. Your humorous replies to "stupid questions" made my day. I'm missing them  loudly_face
Hi (привет) too bad no interviews. I really enjoyed you with Nema и т.д. Cultural collapse at breakneck speed. Don't leave ys without your wit
Dmitry Orlov, Your expressions and your use of the spoken and response to questions cannot be expressed in writing. You were always a fascinating interviewee.
Dmitry Orlov, Watching you interviewed by Nima brought me to your website. I was close with an uncle in the US who was a professor of Soviet history so your arguments and viewpoints resonated. I understand your view about interviews and enjoy your website, but accessing other audiences in any way may be beneficial to bring others here to get better information.
You open a door to what a lot of people have no concept of.
Well Trump is doing nobody knows what exactly? Claiming that he made peace in the Middle east yea right. Just yesterday there was a fire exchange between Israel and Hamas etc. Claiming to threathen China and India and people are responding by stoping to use the dollar. The list goes on and on
Kacper Nowak, I like the expression "bloviating buffoon". Seems apt.
I’m glad you are not doing the YouTube interviews with Nima anymore. It’s better to read. YouTube interviews are inherently dumbed down and repetitive. And also, somehow, they tend to be more pro USA, subtly. It’s good you don’t follow that. Cheers Dimitri!. We’ll keep reading your stuff.
I loved watching you do interviews with Nima, I would laugh my ass off at your sarcasm. Made my days, was always looking forward to it.
I miss interviews on YouTube Dmitri and I think I am not the only one. In Canada it is almost impossible to find any real news on mean stream media. Well thank God more and more people are looking into independent journalism to get proper News. Thank you very much for your work. I received your book Uncontrolled Chaos yesterday. Can't wait to start reading. Thanks
more writing please thanks
Dmitry: Are you saying we are putting on a 'dog and pony show'?
I loved watching you on Nima's show. I literally would go through his list daily trying to find if you had appeared. Your being there is what brought me here. I hope you continue to do interviews as I enjoy them so very much. You have a star quality wrapped up with a devastating dead pan delivery - a very rare quality these days.
Hi Dmitry, so glad to have found you after you stopped giving YT interviews and to be able to subscribe. Question, what is Russia's position on Israel? I just heard Laith Marouf stating this morning on Nima's channel that Russia is calling the shots in Syria with respect to the Israelis. I found that a bit difficult to believe because Russia is a Christian country with a morality that is antithetical to that of Zionists. What is Russia's relationship to Israel? I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question but I am an American normie with virtually no historical knowledge of anywhere on the globe.
Dmitry Orlov, interesting that Russia permits a dual citizenship for Israelis just as the US. The US does not permit dual citizenship for most countries other than Israelis. Curious as to how the Russian government prevented Israelis from taking over as they have the US govt.
Nabee G, that's not true. The US has no concept of "dual citizenship" at all.
I knew that your last interview with Nima would be your last. In addition to how embarrassing his questions were, there were myriad technical issues. It was always amusing and informative to see how you would take a breath and find an intelligent way to turn his ridiculous questions into gold. Before giving up on this completely, I would really recommend trying a podcast with someone who I believe that you would find a kindred soul, Paul of the Sirius report. If you need help setting it up, let me know.
Rob Cohen,
Yes, I do like the majority of the analisys Paul and Ken provide.
But now Dmitry is posting his own podcasts in his channel on Youtube, called "No Questions Asked". I just discovered it today.
I really recommend you go and give it a look - in the case you already had not yet done that.
Artur Rafael Tempesta,
I didn't know that. Thank you! I'll be sure to check that out.
