Stylized HairMesh Creator 1.0.2 — update

What is New?

Working with geometry

  • FBX support for imported geometry, plus textures. The texture manager opens with a double-click on the texture toggle ▦ (for models with UVs).
  • New default look for imported geometry: per-polygon flat shading, like ZBrush — quad diagonals no longer get in the way.
  • New display toggles next to the eye: ▦ — textures, ◐/○ — normal shading or Flat with no lights or shadows.
  • On imported meshes Thickness and Mask are now one modifier with two brushes. The weight colours show only while you work on it — the rest of the time the mesh keeps its plain colour and doesn’t distract.

New curve mode — Flat lock

The Curve tool has a new Lock mode: draw a curve and get a flat ribbon. The circle at the pointer sets the width, and each anchor can change width and rotation. Select two anchors first and the ribbon starts right between them; select three or more and you get a volume branch. Convert turns the ribbon into curves and walls that carry on along the shared trunk.
The ribbon can be extruded: depth, invert, fade to tip, and a brush to extrude only where you want. The Offset brush moves the extruded edges in or out, and Glue faces glues faces together — e.g. the top face closing into a Y profile towards the tip.

Glued locks without manual cleanup

A big part of this update is about the topology of complex hair where locks grow together and part.
  • ⟳ Recalculate glued locks in the group’s Settings prepares glued locks for conversion: shared trunks are welded, facing walls are closed from the fork. One Ctrl+Z undoes it all.
  • The converter sews the seams along shared anchors and drops sliver faces by itself.
  • Merge distance can be typed or picked with the pointer, and hair tips no longer get glued together.
  • Loops: a fork moves onto the nearest loop with no extra edge; no more extra or dense loops at forks, spiral loops, zigzags on diagonals or a dense band under a guide.

X forks, filling and scissors

  • Two curves welded into an X now have independent upper and lower zones. Walls round an X are made without cutting the curves — you can rebuild the shape at any time.
  • ◎ Detect the fill outline here: point at a hole, Shift+RMB and up — the outline is highlighted and the program picks how to fill it.
  • Split ends — a new Scissors mode: click a curve and it splits into two branches from there to the tip.
  • RMB line: drag with RMB across curves to put anchors where it crosses them.
  • Lasso instead of the box for selecting anchors.

Modifiers

  • Visibility and opacity of all modifiers — one ⬡ Modifiers control in the Display menu. At 100% a modifier is fully opaque.
  • Modifiers work with X-ray, show in symmetry, and Apply symmetry copies them with Mask, Thickness and Twist.
  • Modifier guide lines are easier to see, profile points each in their own colour.
  • A group’s Density, Cap and Fill show in its Settings.

Display

  • 👁 Display — every visibility and opacity setting in one drop-down bar.
  • ◐ One colour — the whole model in one colour, without the group colours.
  • Mesh smoothing (Smooth normals) turns on with one tick for every selected mesh.
  • Service curves got short names and their own outliner column, and no longer clutter the viewport.

Misc

  • Space — a pie with every tool.
  • ⧉ Lock select — click a curve to select the whole lock; 📌 Pin keeps an item’s settings shown.
  • Double-click a number to type it, Ctrl + drag to change any number.
  • Loop step is set by itself when you import a head into an empty scene — to fit its size.
  • ⛨ Collision — curves stick to an imported mesh and don’t pass through it.
  • The Convert window folds, Active Tool floats in the viewport corner, window help sits under a “?”.
  • Names can be typed in Korean, Japanese and Chinese.
  • Fixed gizmo jumps in split view and the slowdown from a switched-off guide.

Hotkeys changed

  • Space — the tool pie (hold and release towards a tool).
  • Tab — the camera menu and split view (was Space).
  • 1 / 2 / 3 + LMB navigation removed — use Alt or the middle mouse button.

Thanks for making the app, I've only tested it a lil bit but it worked great so far! I might have missed something so sorry in advance but are there any options to add UV seams and is it possible to edit width segments and the other options of several surfaces at the same time? Would be very convenient
CataRackta, I just meant that if you have a few surfaces, select multiple and e.g. drag the "Width segments" slider or tick the "Second surface" checkbox, those settings will only be applied to the surface you selected last - I feel like it would be convenient if you could modify settings of multiple surfaces at the same time. Ofc there might be a good reason why you can't that im not thinking of
Mezzyy, Sorry for the late reply! This feature wasn't originally included because the intended workflow was to build each strand individually, step by step. However, I'll be adding this functionality in the new version.
Are there any plans to release some sort of proper video guide/tutorial for this? I'm interested in the software but I'm not really sure where I'm supposed to start since the FAQ/docs doesn't really make a process clear.
buru, Sorry for the late reply! I was planning to release a process video this week, but the app was completely rewritten for a new workflow that's much more optimized, clean, and straightforward. I hope to release this update and record some short demo videos for it next week.
This program is a godsend!! It'll make modeling hair so much easier!! Though, I was wondering how to create groups in the software. I was combing through the FAQ and didn't see anything.
Kitty,
The main Pie Menu opens with Shift + RMB. Just hover over the Outliner and create a group using the pie menu.
Also, I’m really glad you’re enjoying the program! However, if you're planning to start a major project in the near future, it’s best to hold off for a bit. A major update with new logic is coming next week, but it won't support older projects.
CataRackta, thank you! Ill keep that in mind, I'm looking forward to the new update.
