I will try to figure out how the artist's book differs from livre d'artiste and how these trends are currently developing.

Есть два термина, связанные с «книгой художника»: французская livre d'artiste и собственно книга художника. Каждое из понятий включает определенные работы со своей собственной интерпретацией книги.

There are two terms associated with "artist's book": the French livre d'artiste and the artist's book itself. Each of the concepts includes certain works with their own interpretation of the book.

Livre d'artiste — это, прежде всего, издательский проект, ориентированный на библиофильский рынок. Издатель несет ответственность за искусство печати. Эта традиция идет от известных французских издателей: Amboise Vollard, Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler и Albert Skira.  Все изданные в то время книги создавались при участии величайших художников, среди которых были П. Боннар, А. Матисс, П. Пикассо, С. Дали и другие.

Livre d'artiste is, first of all, a publishing project aimed at the bibliophile market. The publisher is responsible by the art of printing. This tradition comes from the famous French publishers: Amboise Vollard, Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler and Albert Skira. All books published at that time were created with the participation of the greatest artists, among whom were P. Bonnard, A. Matisse, P. Picasso, S. Dali and others.

Если попробовать выделить какие-то характерные черты livre d’artiste, то здесь особое значение имеет фигура художника. Он создает свою версию книги как законченного произведения искусства. Тем не менее издатель является главным инициатором издания. Чаще всего он сам заказывает иллюстрации или полное оформление книги тому или иному художнику. Эти книги отличаются высочайшим качеством и издаются небольшими тиражами. В среднем тираж колеблется от 100 до 1000 экземпляров.

If we try to highlight some characteristic features of the livre d'artiste, here is the special importance of the figure of the artist.  He offers his own version of the book as a finished work of art. Nevertheless, the publisher is the main initiator of the publication. Most often, he himself orders illustrations or the complete design of the book to one or another artist. These books are characterized by the highest quality and are published in small editions. The average circulation ranges from 100 to 1000 copies.

These works continue to develop and affirm the idea of the supreme value of the book. In a historical context, livre d'artiste opposed the active development of mass and impersonal book publishing.

Another direction, artist's book, is most often hand-made books, completely, from concept to embodiment, made by the artist. The artist's book is an area of ​​unlimited creative freedom for the author. This direction dates back to the man-made books of W. Blake.

В произведениях художника книжная форма с ее традиционными элементами может сохраняться полностью или частично, некоторые элементы книги могут принципиально отрицаться автором или отсутствовать вовсе. Здесь книга представлена скорее как метафора и, обретая новые формы, может быть выполнена из необычных материалов и иметь нестандартные размеры.

In the works of the artist's book the book form with its traditional elements can be preserved in whole or in part, some elements of the book can be denied in principle by the author, or they can be absent altogether. Here the book is presented rather as a metaphor and takes on new forms, it can be made of unusual materials and have non-standard sizes.

Но, как бы далеко ни уходил художник от традиционной формы книги, если он работает в рассматриваемом нами направлении, в основе всего лежит любовь к книге и понимание ее особого места в культуре.

But, no matter how far an artist may depart from the traditional form of a book, if he works in the direction we are considering, the basis of everything is love for the book and understanding of its special place in culture.
