В середине июля 2024 в Сан Франциско прошла книжная ярмарка - SF Art Book Fair. Я побывала на ней и хочу поделиться впечатлениями. Сразу хочу отметить, я не эксперт по фотокнигам и книгам художников, не арт-критик, не обозреватель какого-то издания. Я - художник, интересующийся фотокнигами. Все, что я здесь расскажу - только мое личное мнение.

Вообще, Сан-Франциско не особенно примечательный город в плане фотокнижной жизни. Здесь нет ни одного магазина авторских фотокниг. Это не самая большая проблема - заказать нужную фотокнигу можно онлайн. Но ведь нужно потрогать, полистать, увидеть глазами и пальцами. Для этого можно поехать в Лос Анджелес. Можно мониторить выставки и события в San Francisco Center for the Book, но там только книги художника можно встретить. Или вот раз в год есть возможность сходить на SF Art Book Fair.

San Francisco Book Fair 2024 took place in mid-July. After spending two days there, I want to share my thoughts and impressions. I want to mention that I'm not a photobook expert, an art critic, or a culture journalist. I'm an artist who is interested in photobooks and artist's books. All the rest is my personal opinion. 

Generally speaking, San Francisco is not a photobook city. You won't find a good artist's bookstore here. Though, it's a small problem as you can order any photobook online. However, when buying one, it's crucial to see, touch, and feel a book with your eyes and fingers. Indeed, you can go to Los Angeles or monitor some events at the San Francisco Center for the book. In fact, it's a good place to find an artist's book but not a photobook based on a specific project. An alternative option is to visit a local annual event - SF Book Fair. 

Моя фотокнига "Бином" уже близка к этапу "тираж". И у меня было две цели посещения SF Book Fair: 1) посмотреть, что здесь происходит в области фотокниг и книг художника и 2) посмотреть на локальные калифорнийские издательства - какие они, с какими художниками работают и какие книги печатают. 

В этом году у ярмарки было два больших павильона. В первый день я обошла их без всякого плана и ожиданий. А ко второму дню подготовилась: внимательно изучила сайты локальных издательств и наметила свой маршрут на следующий день по определенным столам. Свой план я выполнила. И хочу рассказать о нескольких калифорнийских издательствах и фотокнигах, которые привлекли мое внимание, удивили или разочаровали.

My photobook "Binom" is close to the publishing stage. Thus, I had two purposes for visiting the fair. First, I wanted to conduct brief market research to see what's going on in the field of artists' books. Second, I planned to meet local Californian publishers and see what artists they work with and what books they publish. 

This year SF Book Fair occupied two big pavilions. During the first day I floated without any plans and expectations. Then I did my homework for the second day. I visited websites of the local publishers and made a roadmap which included their tables. I completed my plan. Now I want to tell some words about some Californian publishers and photobook I was impressed, surprise or disappointed by. 

TBW, Oakland, California - это издательство было "звездой" в моем списке. В прошлом году две их книги вошли в Short List конкурса 2023 PhotoBook Awards/ Aperture and Paris Photo, а одна из них - "Tender" by Carla Williams - взяла там First PhotoBook Award. Очень хотелось полистать эти две книги. 

Начну с "Tender". Удалось ее полистать. Книга вызвала у меня противоречивые впечатления. Карла Уильямс художник, писатель, исследователь и фотограф, пишет о фотографии и об истории и правах темнокожих в Америке. Ее биография вызывает большое уважение целеустремленностью и последовательностью. Обо всем этом нет информации в книге - я это выяснила, читая об авторе в интернете. Фотокнига "Tender" состоит из интимных автопортретов 18-летний Карлы, сделанных ею во время начала обучения фотографии в Princeton. Книга сделана с большой нежностью - монтаж, бархатистая на ощупь бумага, телесные цвета в оформлении - это чувствуется. Но, это не "моя" книга. Честно скажу, я довольно сложно подключаюсь к проектам на тему принятия своей телесности. Частая форма таких проектов - серия обнаженных автопортретов. И я много раз ловила себя на том, что считываю из таких серий юношеский эксгибиционизм и желание "громко крикнуть о себе". Мне там не хватает глубины. Для меня фотокнига - это проект, над которым художник целенаправленно работает: выбирает тему, исследует ее, разрабатывает форму и содержание проекта. Особенно меня впечатляет, когда в основе проекта лежит какая-то человеческая история и все в книге, от выбора фотографий до ее формы и материалов, работает на повествование этой истории и масштабирование ее для подключения других людей. Поскольку "Tender" участвовала в конкурсе и победила, я сравнивала ее с другими книгами из short list. На мой личный взгляд, в нем были более сильные авторские работы.

TBW, Oakland, California - this publisher was a star in my list. Last year two books published there were shortlisted in 2023 PhotoBook Awards by Aperture and Paris Photo. One of them won the First Photobook Award. It was "Tender" by Carla Williams. I wanted to look at and to touch those books. 

"Tender" caused discrepant feelings. Carla Williams is an artist, writer, researcher and photographer. She writes about photography and history of African Americans. Her bio looks strictly determined causing respectful feelings towards her. I learnt those facts reading about her in the Internet, not in the book. Photogook "Tender" consists of intimate self-portraits of 18 y.o. Carla. She took them in her fresh year in Princeton University where she studied photography. 

The book is made tenderly, and you can feel it: delicate editing of black and white photographs, velvet paper, and fleshy colors. However, it's not my cup of tea. To be honest, it's challenging for me to connect to the projects about body acceptance. Often, such projects are implemented in the form of intimate self-portraits. Many times I  caught myself thinking that such an exaltation is a gesture to show up effectively. I didn't get enough profoundness in the project. I consider a photobook as a complex project run by an artist who chose the theme, did research, and developed an idea and a form of the project. I am especially impressed if a personal story is the basis of the project and all the details, materials, and forms help to translate the idea. While "Tender" won the First Photobook Award, I compared it with other books from the shortlist. In my personal opinion, there were more profound projects and photobooks that year. Indeed, I want to remind you that it's my personal opinion. 

Сразу после "Tender" я изучила еще одну книгу издательства - "Men Untitled" by Carolyn Drake. Она про отношения художницы с мифами о мускулинностости в американской культуре. Интересная обложка - выпуклые мужские конгрев-портреты - задает тему мускулиностости. Хорошая печать, разнообразные фотографии в сдержанной цветовой палитре. Но к этой книге я не смогла подключиться. Возможно, из-за моих персональных сложностей с проектами про телесность. Или из-за моих пробелов в понимании американского культурного кода. Может быть, мне нужен правильный проводник в эту книгу.

Right after "Tender," I explored another book by the same publisher - "Men Untitled" by Carolyn Drake. The book is about the artist's relationship with myths of masculinity in American culture. The cover is attractive - embossed male portraits in relief set the theme of masculinity. The quality of printing is high. The photographs were made in a restrained color palette. However, I couldn't connect with this book. Maybe it's because of my personal difficulties with bodiliness projects. Perhaps it's due to my gaps in understanding the American cultural code. Maybe I need the right guiding person to introduce me to this book.

Теперь о второй книге издательства, вошедшей в short list 2023 First PhotoBook Awards - "Painting photographs" by Alice Wong. Мне она показалась более интересной в контексте шортлиста, чем "Tender". Собственно, фотокнига состоит из раскрашенных винтажных фотографий. Краски и фломастеры автора визуально приводят разрозненные изображения к общему знаменателю. Мне близка мысль о том, что семейные альбомы в любой точке мира очень похожи. Но также я задавалась вопросом, как получается, что люди с похожим прошлым, со схожими мечтами о счастье и семейном уюте, вдруг оказываются по разные стороны окопов... Внезапно, листая книгу на ярмарке, я подумала о том, что, возможно, мысль о похожести семейных альбомов - это желаемое, а не действительное. А что если есть микро-различия, которые приводят потом к трагедиям в реальности. И что нужно искать и исследовать именно эти почти невидимые различия. Если у меня, у зрителя, пошел мыслительный процесс и внутренний диалог на заданную автором тему, как правило, это говорит о том, что автор хорошо справился с работой, сделал хороший проект (на мой субъективный взгляд). 

А уже позже дома я выяснила, что художница - участница Creative Growth Art Center, старейшей и крупнейшей некоммерческой организации, объединяющей художников с developmental disabilities inthe United States. Ее художественная практика - раскрашивать найденные семейные фотографии. И я еще раз порадовалась за художницу и испытала уважение к конкурсу за инклюзивность.

Now, here are a few words about the second book by TBW from the 2023 First PhotoBook Awards shortlist. It's "Painting Photographs" by Alice Wong. I found it more interesting in the context of the awards than "Tender." Essentially, the photobook consists of painted vintage photographs. The author's paints and markers visually bring the disparate images to a common denominator. I resonate with the idea that family albums are very similar, no matter where in the world. But I also wondered how people with similar pasts, with similar dreams of happiness and family values, suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of the trenches...

While flipping through the book, I thought that the similarity of family albums might be more wishful than realistic. What if there are micro-differences that later lead to real-life tragedies? And what if we need to search for and explore these almost invisible differences? If my inner dialogue on the topic set by the author started, it indicates that the author did a good job of creating a strong project (in my subjective opinion).

Later, at home, I found out that the artist is a participant in the Creative Growth Art Center, the oldest and largest nonprofit organization that supports artists with developmental disabilities in the United States. Her artistic practice is to paint found vernacular photographs. Indeed, I felt happy for the artist and had a respect for the PhotoBook Awards inclusivity.

Следующее издательство - Zatara press, Richmond, VA. Они сами говорят о себе как о небольшом независимом издательстве авторских фотокниг с уникальным дизайном и коллаборативно разработанной формой. На сайте они очень подробно и четко описывают свои рабочие ценности и принципы. В этом  чувствуется уважение к авторам проектов. Это очень честно рассказать о том, как работаешь, и пригласить к сотрудничеству тех авторов, которым близок этот стиль сотрудничества.

На столе издательства меня привлек настоящий дамми -"The Cedar Lodge", Maya Meissner. Оказалось, что тираж книги "The Cedar Lodge" как раз сейчас в процессе и открыт предзаказ. В основе книги - реальная история о Yosemite Killer, который действовал на территории около национального парка Йосемити в конце 1990-х. The Cedar Lodge был одой из гостиниц, в которых он останавливался. Семья Maya Meissner была с знакома с этим человеком. И вот спустя много лет Майа возвращается в эти места с фотокамерой, пытаясь отрефлексировать свои дискомфорт и смешанные чувства, и сепарироваться от всей этой истории из детства.

The next publisher is Zatara press, Richmond, VA. They describe themselves as "an independent, small press, photography book publishing company ... to give a voice to a variety of projects through the medium of unique "Artist's Styled Photobooks." On their website, they clearly and thoroughly outline their work values and principles. This conveys a sense of respect for the artists and their projects. It's very transparent to explain themselves and invite authors who resonate with this style of collaboration.

On the publisher's table, I saw a real dummy copy - "The Cedar Lodge" by Maya Meissner. It turned out that the edition of "The Cedar Lodge" is currently in progress and available for pre-order. The book is based on the true story of the Yosemite Killer, who was active in the area around Yosemite National Park in the late 1990s. The Cedar Lodge was one of the hotels where he stayed. Maya Meissner's family was acquainted with this person. And now, many years later, Maya returns to these places with a camera, trying to reflect on her discomfort and confusion and to separate from this childhood story.

Надо сказать, что посещение природных парков в Америке - это очень популярный вид семейного отдыха. А Йосемити один из самых известных парков - безумно красивый, с историей про Анселя Адамса (все американцы знают Адамса и его фотографии). И в самом парке и вокруг него царит торжественный природный покой. Что, конечно, очень контрастирует с мыслью о жестоком убийце в этих местах. А личное знакомство с ним делает историю многослойной и сложной. 

Мне понравились и другие книжки издательства. И, надо сказать, что Zatara press в этом году еще и получили издательский грант $5000 от SF Book Fair и Edition One Book. Издательство не из Калифорнии, но невозможно было пройти мимо.

It's worth mentioning that visiting national parks in America is a very popular form of family recreation. Yosemite is one of the most famous nature parks. It is incredibly beautiful and has a history tied to Ansel Adams (every American knows Adams and his photographs). There is a majestic natural serenity in the park. This, of course, contrasts with the thought of a serial killer in these places. The personal connection with him makes the story even more layered and complex.

I also liked other books from the publisher. And it's worth noting that Zatara Press received a $5,000 publisher grant this year from SF Book Fair and Edition One Book. Although the publisher isn't based in California, it was impossible to overlook them.

На столе издательства Rite Editions, San Francisco, CA, мое внимание привлекла книга с интересным оформлением: выверенный цветовой код, фотографии похожие на застывшие во времени натюрморты и их фрагменты, необычные формы страниц. Книга, которую можно было листать с любой стороны и даже с середины - "At the hour of tea", Paul Sietsema. Это было похоже на медитацию цветом и формой. Как выяснилось, эта книга была сделана по одноименному фильму художника.

Повествование в этой книге отсутствует, только визуальная составляющая. Очень похоже на картинки из Мидджерней, завораживающая форма без содержания, пустой знак. Пожалуй, на этой книжке мое убеждение, что хорошая фотокнига - это прежде всего идея, история и работа с темой, а потом уже форма - немного поколебалось. Видимо, наступает привыкание к привлекательным пустым знакам. 

Как выяснилось, Rite Editions только распространяют эту книгу. А напечатало ее издательство из Миннеаполиса Shapco Printing Inc в 2014 году.

At the table of Rite Editions, San Francisco, CA, a book with intriguing design caught my attention: sophisticated color coding, still-lives and their fragments frozen in time, and intricately shaped pages. The book, which could be flipped through from any side, was "At the Hour of Tea" by Paul Sietsema. It felt like a color and form meditation. The book was created basing on the artist's film with the same title.

The book has no narrative, only visual series of photographs. Each photograph resembles images from Midjourney—captivating form without content, an empty sign. Perhaps with this book, my belief that a good photobook is based on the story and artist's exploration of the theme was somewhat shaken. It seems I get used to see empty signs.

Rite Editions only distributes this book. It was published by Shapco Printing Inc. from Minneapolis in 2014.

А дальше со мной случился пунктум от встречи с одной книгой - "Theatrum Equorum" by AndreaModica. Издана она в TIS books - это издательство из Нью Йорка. Я изначально его не собиралась смотреть, но обложка книги позвала. Значит, хорошая обложка! 

Форма книги классическая - альбом. Меня очень впечатлил сам проект. Задел меня за животное. Андреа проводила съемку в ветеринарной клинике для лошадей. И вид жеребцов после операций, тела которых обессилено обрушены на пол устланный сеном... Большой фотопроект, хороший монтаж. Единственная фотография человека в самом конце книги - портрет доброй медсестры, как рассказывает сама автор в интервью - выглядит как портрет Демиургессы, вершащей судьбы и тела этих прекрасных животных.

Сейчас уже мой пунктум немного поутих, я почитала про проект, и интервью Андреа - там не все так жестко, как кажется сразу после просмотра последовательности фотографий в книге.

Right after, I encountered punctum with the book "Theatrum Equorum" by Andrea Modica. It was published by TIS Books from New York. I didn't plan to visit the publisher's table, but the cover called out to me. I can say that the cover design is well done!

The format of the book is a classic album. The photo project itself deeply impressed me. It got me to my guts. Andrea took photographs in a veterinary clinic for horses. The sight of stallions after surgeries, their weakened bodies collapsed on the hay-covered floor... It's a profound photo project with a cinematic edition. The only photograph of a human comes at the very end of the book. It's a portrait of a kind nurse, as the author tells in an interview, who looks like a Demigoddess, determining the fates and bodies of these magnificent animals.

Now my punctum is less intense and I've read more about the project. It turns out the project is less thought than it initially seemed to be. 

Отдельно расскажу про еще два небольших калифорнийских издательства. Они мне понравились своими концепциями, историями создания и текущими проектами. 

Deep Time Press, Berkeley, CA - независимое издание основанное двумя художникми Justin James King and LeahKoransky. Они оба были на ярмарке и мне удалось с ними побеседовать. Они сообщили, что все проекты, с которыми работает издательство, связаны с концепциями времени и места. На столе у них можно было купить магнитную кассету - как часть одного из проектов издательства. То есть они в наши дни нашли производителя кассет и заказали у него тираж со своим дизайном и звуками проекта! Вот это изгиб времени! Еще они посоветовали мне две книги о времени - я их уже заказала, буду читать. Мне очень понравилась открытость основателей издательства. Хотела купить у них принт с камнем - лаконичный и минималистичный - но они все оказались sold out.

It's worth to mention two small California-based publishers. I liked them for their concepts, founding stories, and current projects.

Deep Time Press, Berkeley, CA - an independent publisher founded by two artists, Justin James King and Leah Koransky. Both were present at the fair, and I had the chance to talk to them. They told me that all the projects they work on are tied to the concepts of time and place. On their table, you could buy a magnetic cassette as part of one of their projects. They actually found a cassette manufacturer nowadays and ordered a batch with their own design and project sounds! That's a real twist of time! They also recommended two books about time, which I've already ordered and plan to read. I really liked the openness of the founders. I wanted to buy one of their prints featuring a stone—very minimalistic—but they were all sold out.

Night Divers, Albany, CA - это, как они сами о себе говорят, коллаборативная практика двух художников Peter Calderwood and Lena Gustafson. Издают свои книги и зины. Мне понравилась их инициатива - журнал "Практика". Они беседуют с локальными  художниками, снимают авторов и их работы в арт студиях и публикуют  интервью в журнале. Свежий номер уникален тем, что с десятью художниками побеседовали в  начале 2020 и в 2023, уже после ковида. Интересный срез времени получился - художники рассказывают, как изменились сами и их практика после ковида. С 2022 года столько событий уже произошло, что ковид звучит уже как-то неправдоподобно. Но ведь он был, и оказал большое влияние на людей. Мне было интересно читать интервью. 

Всего я насчитала 147 участников SF Book Fair. Конечно, я посмотрела далеко не всех из них, даже не все издательства, не сходила ни на одно из мероприятий публичной программы. Но факт наличия рядом разных издательств, от звездного до независимых частных инициатив художников, очень порадовал. Интересно теперь побывать на ярмарке в будущем году и посетить таки Xerox party, надеюсь, она снова будет.

Night Divers, Albany, CA - this is, as they describe themselves, the collaborative practice of two artists, Peter Calderwood and Lena Gustafson. They publish their own books and zines. I liked their initiative to make the "Practice" magazine. They interview local artists, photograph them and their work in art studios, and publish the interviews in the journal. The latest issue is unique because they spoke with ten artists in early 2020 and again in 2023, post-COVID. It offers a snapshot of time: the artists explained how they and their practices changed after the pandemic. So many events have happened since 2022 that COVID-19 now seems almost unreal. Yet it happened and had a significant impact on people. I found the interviews fascinating.

In total, I counted 147 participants at the SF Book Fair. Indeed, I didn't see all of them—not even all the publishers. Also I didn't attend any of the public program events. However, the presence of a variety of publishers, from big labels to independent artist initiatives, was very encouraging. Now I'm eager to visit the fair next year. Hopefully I will attend the Xerox party if they host it again!
