Redheaded Peckerwood & Badlands
Рассказывая про найденные фотографии, с которыми сейчас работаю, я вспомнила фильм Терренса Малика "Пустоши" и, в связи с этим, хочу напомнить вам о книге, автор которой был вдохновлен этим фильмом, - REDHEADED PECKERWOOD Кристиана Паттерсона. Название книги переводится "Рыжая бестия". Автор в своей работе следует маршрутами двух малолетних преступников, чья история попала в заголовки газет по всей Америке. В книге он использует и свои фотографии, и найденные материалы, такие, например, как вырезки из газет и фотографии из архивов - опять метод апроприации, скоро остановлюсь на нем подробнее.
When talking about the found photographs I'm working with now, I remembered the film ‘Badlands’ by Terrence Malick and, in this regard, I want to remind you of the book whose author was inspired by this film - REDHEADED PECKERWOOD by Christian Patterson. The author in his work follows the routes of two juvenile delinquents whose story made headlines all over America. In the book he uses both his own photographs and found materials, such as newspaper clippings and photographs from archives - again the method of appropriation, I will touch on it more soon.

In my opinion this is one of the best, if not the best book, built as a detective investigation and, at the same time, the author's reflection on the fate of the two characters.

Christian Patterson: "Создавая эту работу, я позволял своим идеям приходить откуда угодно, включая собственное воображение, которое, конечно, в значительной степени интерпретирует их. Christian Patterson: "In making this work, I allowed my ideas to come from anywhere, including my own imagination, which of course is highly interpretive. As a result, some of the images are very close and true to the story while others are more mysterious and atmospheric in effect. Doing this with a true crime story that had been solved, a case that had been closed and a story that has been extensively documented, reinterpreted and mythologized in books and films was unusual."

I am now returning my thoughts to this book and this story, because I think about those kids from the distant 1980s who are looking at me from the photos from the archive I found and I think, who were their heroes? Who did they imitate in their games? Maybe I should let them continue their games in the pages of my book?

Christian Patterson says: "On an artistic level, I entered the work as a photographer but the challenge of working with a story 50 years after the fact pushed me into new territory—making a range of different types of images and playing with drawing, painting and sculpture. This made the process and the resulting work more interesting to me, and hopefully to others. I’ve also tried to bring this approach to bear in different ways, with the book and its use of inserts and in installations that include documents, objects, drawings and paintings to complement my photographs."

I have already talked in great detail about this book (read here), as well as about the exhibition Scrapbooks. Inside the imagination of filmmakers, which featured an installation based on this book and the film Badlands (link). Although Christian Patterson is not a film director, he is obsessed with cinema. His work became the centrepiece of the exhibition, creating the impression of a three-dimensional album on the walls.

Я же подумаю как воплотить свою идею, не отходя от сложившейся концепции - не вмешиваться в найденный материал, а создавать историю только с помощью последовательности и верстки.
I, on the other hand, will think about how to realise my idea without departing from the established concept of not interfering with the found material, but creating the story with sequences and layout only.
