Streaming and listeners. Current ways to get a new audience. (ENG)
Hey. In 2015, when I started the Digital Koala project, my Soundcloud looked
like a desert. The situation was the same with Spotify because I didn't know about this service. Remember that Spotify officially appeared in Russia in 2021, and in 2022 it left our country again. Nevertheless, we were secretly looking for ways to register to get access to the artist's account and start pitching tracks.
I am writing this preface to the fact that not everyone immediately received their audience, and no one there weren't thousands of subscribers. Yes, I still don't have many of them, about 4-5 thousand, but it has their weight, and today I will tell you about them in more detail.
1. Spotify and why you need to motivate listeners to subscribe
Spotify is currently one of the most popular streaming platforms, with an audience of more than 400 million listeners. Our music genre is very narrow and has a small circle of listeners, particularly Britain, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, and Belgium.
How do I get a good start to your release on Spotify?
- be sure to fill out the pitch and try to do it as honestly as possible. Tell us a short story of the track's creation, and what you were inspired by. Be sure to indicate your promotion methods (targeting, mailing to DJs, contracts with major playlist curators, an article about the release, etc.). Although Spotify editors have a particular taste (especially in Britain), this will increase your chances of getting into the official playlists and give you a 100% guarantee of getting into the “Release Radar”.
- “Release Radar” - is an excellent tool for promoting your creativity, which you need to focus on. How does it work? The “Novelty Radar” is updated every Friday for all users based on their interests. All the artists that the user is subscribed to get into this playlist. Thus, we bring live organic listening without any investment. Sounds good, doesn't it? Let's give some statistics from my office. In November, I released the track Touch The Sky, which we recorded with Dynascope.
Currently, I have 3800 Spotify subscribers, and the track has 6500 streams since its release (November 25). And how many streams have come from the “Release Radar”?
1570 streams! Is it a lot or a little? Let's look at the percentage ratio; it will better reflect the situation. This is almost 25% of all auditions! Quarter! This is a pretty good figure, and considering that Spotify's algorithms also offer a track by preference playlists, it works perfectly for us.
- How to attract a listener? There are several ways of development.
Let's start with the simplest – releasing music on labels.
I will explain using the example of CruCast as the largest label I have worked with for a long time. My first release on CruCast took place on April 3, 2020, as part of the compilation “New Blood VOL.3".
Yes, almost all new artists of the label start their careers with releases in compilations. I took part in 2 or 3, after which I have already released a solo EP and singles.
Let's go back to the track. At the time of the track's release, I had only 70 subscribers. I am sure this is your case, and the figures of your office look something like this now. If it's better, then it's already good! And here's the moment, of course, I didn't know any ways to promote + tracks from compilations can't be pitched. In general, I just trusted the label, and it worked. CruCast has a massive playlist for 23,000 subscribers, which includes all the label's releases. For a beginner, it is a huge free tool that will introduce his potential audience to new music (and it is 100% in style here track) and will give additional subscriptions, which next time will already work on the “Release Radar". It would seem a relatively simple and understandable tool, but not for everyone, unfortunately. That's why I highly recommend studying the releases of the label you want to release on. Go to the same Spotify and see how many listeners the artist has and how many auditions the release has collected. This is easy to understand by examining several accounts.
Let's continue the topic of our pumping subscribers and use another free tool, which I have repeatedly told you about:
2. Hypedit.
In this case, we are interested in downloading for a repost/comment/subscription and other steps available only in the PRO version by subscription. Investments are inevitable if you are trying to grow and improve. To work with Hypedit, we will need content. In my case, these are bootlegs, samples, and presets. What is the point? You upload a track or demo audio of a preset demo to your Soundcloud and attach a link by clicking on which the listener can download the content by following a few steps.
I prefer not to complicate things and use only two resources: Spotify and Soundcloud. And there and there, I need an audience. Both there and there, she will listen to your future releases and, as a result, monetize your product. I ask for downloading: subscribe to me in SC and Spotify, subscribe to my playlist in Spotify, write a comment, like, and repost in SC. In words, it doesn't look very easy, but in the process of work, it is speedy, literally three clicks.
Some producers ask to subscribe to their Instagram. Still, I do not recommend doing this for two reasons: Instagram will eventually send your account to a shadow ban 2) There is no verification of Instagram subscriptions on Hypedit. Just click the “Follow” button, but it is not necessary to subscribe, so this step is useless for me.
I also want to note that Hypedit algorithms have their genre and general tops, getting into which is guaranteed to give a boost, and the track begins to arouse more interest, and as a result, your subscriptions, likes, and reposts grow.
By the way, I note that this method of promotion is directly related to the previous point about the “Release Radar”, because your audience on Spotify is growing, and they will be interested in new music since it coincides with their musical preferences.
I think today I talked about the main ways to capture subscribers, which will help you collect your first thousand fans. These tools work, and my statistics confirm this. Never stop experimenting and using new promotion tools. If you have an excellent friend or a targetologist, be sure to connect him to the promotion of your project. I have all the coverage and listeners due to a strange musical phenomenon, so I missed this step, although for promotion in Russia it
is quite an interesting moment that can be considered in the future.
