In my point of view, ideal go farther than what we have at hand nowadays but to something that we prefer for every criteria.
But if you just want to choose from something of the shelf, an AR15 setup like the L403A1 is about the best we have nowadays. Why?
It's lethal enough with the 5.56 Nato.
As enough range.
It's the most ergonomic rifle if you count the pointability, the control position and operation.
It's lightweight enough, precise enough and the connection with optic is great.
It's low cost.
It's reliable.
