Task of the Day | Baduanjin (八段錦) | Eight Pieces of Brocade

The Baduanjin (八段錦) complex, or "Eight Pieces of Brocade," is a classic of health-preserving Qigong.

Its name suggests that the exercises are as precious and elegant as expensive silk fabric. Here is a breakdown of each of the eight elements from the perspective of movement physics and energy work:
1. Upholding the Heavens with Both Hands (两手托天理三焦)
Elements: Fire (火), Water (水), and Earth (土).
Alchemy: This is the "vertical alignment" of the alchemical vessel. It opens the Zhong Mai (Central Channel), allowing the Triple Burner to distribute Qi evenly between the three Dantians.
Action: Interlace fingers, lift palms toward the sky while rising on the balls of the feet (optional), then look up and stretch.Effect: Harmonizes the Triple Burner (San Jiao). It creates space for the internal organs, allows "Heart Fire" to descend, and "Kidney Water" to rise, initiating the Kan and Li (坎离) interaction.
2. Drawing the Bow to Shoot the Eagle (左右开弓似射雕)
Elements: Metal (金) and Wood (木).
Alchemy: Balances expansion and contraction. The "angry gaze" directs Qi into the external channels, tempering the defensive Wei Qi (卫气).
Action: Step into a wide Horse Stance (Mabu), cross the arms, and pull one hand back as if drawing a heavy bowstring while the other points a "sword-finger" toward the horizon.Effect: Expands the chest to strengthen the Lungs and stretches the sides to clear the Liver. It builds "Internal Pressure" to pierce through stagnant energetic blockages.
3. Separating Heaven and Earth (调理脾胃须单臂)
Element: Earth (土).
Alchemy: The Earth element is the pivot of the soul. This movement "grinds" and refines energy in the Middle Dantian, the "Central Palace."Action: Lift one palm toward the sky and press the other toward the earth, alternating sides with a slight stretch in the torso.
Effect: Regulates the Spleen and Stomach. It creates a vertical pull that massages the digestive system, ensuring a stable foundation for the transformation of Jing into Qi.
4. Wise Owl Gazes Backward (五劳七伤望后瞧)
Elements: Water (水) and Fire (火).
Alchemy: A "cleansing" movement. Turning the head stimulates the Du Mai (Governor Vessel) and gathers scattered Shen (Spirit) back into the body.
Action: Slowly turn the head to look over the shoulder while rotating the palms outward and opening the chest.Effect: Eliminates the "Five Fatigues" and "Seven Injuries" (stagnant emotions). It releases neck tension and prevents the depletion of the Yin-water of the Kidneys.
5. Sway the Head and Shake the Tail (摇头摆尾去心火)
Elements: Fire (火) and Water (水).
Alchemy: This is the "Lustration" process—using the movement of the lower body to quench the overactive fire of the upper body.
Action: In a wide stance, lower the torso and swing the head and hips in a circular motion, shifting weight from side to side.Effect: Clears "Heart Fire." It moves excess heat from the chest down into the pelvic basin where it can be transformed into useful warmth for the lower cauldron.
6. Two Hands Hold the Feet (两手攀足固肾腰)Element: Water (水).Alchemy: Strengthening the "Root." By stretching the spine, you open the Mingmen (Gate of Life), allowing primordial Yuan Qi to rise.Action: Bend forward, sliding the hands down the back of the legs to grasp the feet or toes, keeping the knees as straight as possible.Effect: Nourishes the Kidneys and Bladder. It tonifies the "Vital Essence" and ensures the lower cauldron is sealed and strong.
7. Clenching Fists with Glaring Eyes (攒拳怒目增气力)
Element: Wood (木).
Alchemy: Refinement of the Will (Zhi). By clenching the fists and focusing the gaze, you condense Qi and lock it within the fascia and bones.
Action: From a horse stance, punch forward slowly but with "hidden strength," keeping the eyes wide and focused on a point in the distance.Effect: Stimulates the Liver and increases "Spirit Strength." It transforms raw anger into disciplined power and increases the density of the alchemical body.
8. Bouncing on the Heels Seven Times (背后七颠百病消)
Element: Metal (金).
Alchemy: The "Sealing of the Elixir." The vibration acts like a hammer on a forge, settling all refined energy into the Lower Dantian.
Action: Rise high on the toes, then allow the heels to drop heavily to the floor, sending a vibration through the entire spine.Effect: Cures "One Hundred Illnesses" by shaking off stagnant Qi. It integrates the entire practice, ensuring the refined energy is stored safely at the center.
