Matt climbed over Bo and turned back at the door: the other man was still lying motionless, as if the threat that had loomed over him had not disappeared or could return at any moment. But while Carter was trying to figure out what it all meant, the young man shot him a contemptuous glare and turned away, pulling the blanket up to his ears. As if nothing had happened. But Matt was already awake enough to be sure: he hadn't imagined it. And there was something about it… strange. Something he'd have to mull over.
Taking hold of the doorknob, Carter opened the way into the solid white haze. The cold hit him immediately, as if it were not May outside but the dead of January. He'd spent only a couple of minutes just a few steps from the house, but he was so chilled that he hurried back into the warmed cabin very quickly. To his surprise, his head had cleared, the fever had subsided, and hunger had set in. If the day before Matt had forced himself to eat because he had to, now he was ready to devour a whole deer.
"Where's the meat I brought? Where did he put it?" – The lawman glanced at the sleeping hired gun, but decided not to wake him. Or was he not asleep? Unclear. – "I'll poke him if I don't find it. It's not like there's that much space here to hide anything. And that scrawny kid couldn't have eaten it all." – Methodically searching the corners, Matt finally spotted a bag strap sticking out from under the window frame, and the bag itself outside. – "Hung the meat out in the cold? Clever. I need to grab a big chunk… Though by the time it thaws, I'll starve to death in here. Need something to snack on… Oh, beans!"
While he was busy with the simple cooking, Bo finally woke up. He lay still for a while, listening to the sounds, then got up: the enticing smells of food had awakened his hunger too. Only unlike Carter, he wanted real food, not canned stuff.
"Maybe there's some pasta here? That'd go well with the meat."
– How's your leg? Any better?
– The swelling's gone down a bit. – The young man shrugged, not even looking down.
– My toes move. But when I'll be able to stand on it, I don't know. I've never broken anything before. Not anytime soon, that's for sure.
– I've broken bones, but never a leg like that. So I don't know either. – Sighing, Matt studied his companion thoughtfully, and when the other raised an eyebrow in question, he nodded at him. – Thanks. Didn't think you had such a light hand.
– You mean the bullet? Ah, come on… – Bo seemed almost taken aback, clearly not expecting such words directed at him. – You didn't flinch, so it turned out neat. What was I supposed to do…
– You fussed with the bandages afterward too. – Running his fingers over his shoulder, Carter felt warmth, but now it no longer seemed so threatening. – It really is better.
– Well, if it's better, then you didn't catch an infection. It'll heal. – Bo tried to block the found pasta from the deputy's predatory gaze with his back, but when the other man sidled around to peek into the pot, he gave up. – Another two or three days of dressing it, and then we can probably leave it open... You want some?
– Yeah. – A pleased smile spread across Matt's face. – So tell me, how did you end up from the city out here in the middle of nowhere?
– I don't know, just… – Judging by his tone, the young man really didn't know. – It's not like I had any goals or reasons. I just kept riding west while I could. One day I'll probably hit the ocean.
– And then what? – For some reason, the thought of the ocean appealed to Matt, though he'd never seen it.
– No idea. – Bo shrugged like a man for whom the question of tomorrow was a dead end. – North, maybe. To Alaska.
– It's cold there.
– I've already figured out you like warmth. – It was hard not to smirk. – I like snow. Where there's snow, there are usually few people.
– How can you live without people at all? Sure, they're bastards and scumbags, but completely alone… it's lonely. No one to talk to. I always thought that out in the wilderness, away from the cities, people are more honest and, I don't know, purer. When you're busy surviving, you don't really care how things look, and all your true colors come out. It becomes clear what kind of person you really are.
– I don't know. In my opinion, people are all assholes the same way.
– Taken a lot of hits? Or where does that certainty come from? – Matt leaned back in his chair and relaxed into it.
– Haven't seen any evidence to the contrary. – At that, Bo looked at him with something between surprise and doubt, but didn't comment.
– Then why did you help?
– Because a guy who can't walk is definitely gonna die on his own.
"It's all just for survival."
Right?..
– For mere survival, you wouldn't have tried that hard. I don't believe that every single person in your life was an asshole. Did your old man beat you?
– What? No. What gave you that idea?
– I don't know... I've often noticed that the guys who ended up bitter at the world were the ones whose fathers didn't give them something at home. Some – a good thrashing. Others – some life wisdom. So I just guessed. Some people run from the city because there's no room there and they can't see the ocean, and others – because their family life is rotten and they think there's a better lot waiting somewhere else.
– No… Everything was normal in my family. Like everyone else's. – Bo paused, as if he doubted something. – I don't know. I guess I just got tired of it all. Wanted some variety.
– You must have lived well, if you lacked variety. – Matt grinned, but it seemed harmless enough. – Besides, you don't look like some poor wretch.
– Well… I'm not complaining.
Carter chuckled again, then made a demanding gesture. At first Bo didn't get it, but following his companion's gaze, he realized he wanted a cigarette. He shrugged and handed one over. Taking a deep drag, Matt looked at the blizzard outside the window and slowly exhaled.
– Tomorrow I'll go check the traps, maybe this'll all settle down.
– Maybe you shouldn't? If you step in a trap, I won't be able to get you out of it.
This isn't care. This is just a matter of survival.
– It's too far to walk for the horse. I roughly remember where I scattered them, so I'll poke around with something, a stick of some sort.
– Your call. – Bo made a skeptical face. – If you drag a trap back on your leg, I'll have to think about what to do with you.
– You'll toss that trap closer to the house so I can crawl to it. – Pleased with his joke, Matt touched his shoulder again, clamped the cigarette between his teeth, and started to change the bandage on his wound.
– Oh, give it here. – The young man winced. – You're gonna make a mess of it with one hand.
Not. Care.
Just. Survival.
– I was starting to think you wouldn't volunteer. – Carter grinned smugly. – You're full of shit saying all people are assholes.
– I'm about to change my mind.
– Okay, okay! – Looking at Bo's suddenly stern face, Matt couldn't help laughing. – Tell me what you've seen in your travels.
