This video explains how to crochet a row without a starting chain row - out of extended double crochets. Here I show how to make the first row and do the corners for a zigzag pattern. But the beginning and the end of the rows are done by ch3+2 dctog and 3 dctog respectively.

For a better left corner make ch3 instead of ch2 as shown in the video.
