Vyborg Castle was founded in 1293 during the third Swedish Crusade. The naval militia landed on the coast of the Gulf of Finland in the area of modern Vyborg and ravaged the Karelian settlement and the Karelian guard post on a small island. The Swedes laid a castle on the island and named it Vyborg (translated from Old Swedish — "Holy Fortress").
