MPC184 Viewer for ANSYS Mechanical: a practical tool for working with large numbers of MPC connections
I have been working with structural finite element models for many years, and one thing has not changed much: quite often the most time-consuming part of the job is not the calculation itself.
It is the preparation of the model, checking that everything has been created correctly, and then extracting the results in a form that can actually be used for an engineering assessment.
This is exactly how the idea of MPC184 Viewer appeared.
The tool was not originally planned as a separate project. It started from several APDL scripts that I used for creating large numbers of MPC184 connections in ANSYS Mechanical. Over time those scripts became more complicated because, as usual, once you automate one operation, the next question is how to check that the automation itself has done the right thing.
That gradually turned into a complete workflow.
The problem I was trying to solve
In some of my models I need to connect many local regions using MPC elements. The typical arrangement is based on pairs of Named Selections:
W1A / W1B
W2A / W2B
W3A / W3B
and so on.
For several connections this can be handled manually without much difficulty.
For dozens or hundreds of connections it becomes a different problem.
The APDL part itself is not particularly complicated. You can select the nodes, find corresponding nodes within a tolerance and generate the required MPC184 elements.
The real difficulty starts afterwards.
You need to know whether all expected nodes were paired, whether some nodes were missed, whether the tolerance was sensible, whether the connection appeared where it was supposed to appear, and whether the same node has unintentionally ended up in a boundary condition or another constraint.
